A longer view: Solis Partners Managing Director Jamie Hahn on New Jersey Governor Christie's Energy Master Plan and the state's SREC market

Solar Server: Overall, what are your impressions of Governor Christie's Energy Master Plan for New Jersey?

Jamie Hahn: Overall, I feel as though the EMP provides a roadmap for how New Jersey can promote a diverse portfolio of new, clean, cost-effective in-state electric generation. I think it recognizes the role that solar power can play in meeting the state’s RPS objective as well as its role as an engine for economic growth. The jobs, the economic growth and all of these small businesses created by the solar industry are most important. The numbers speak for themselves when looking at the number of jobs created in this sector in one of the worst economic climates of our lifetime.

A different problem to be solved: Solar Power Technologies President and CEO Ray Burgess on SPT's Clarity suite and power optimization for large PV plants

Solar Server: Let's start with an overview of your Clarity suite of products, and what they specifically offer to your clients. What are the main barriers to system performance that your Clarity products address?

Ray Burgess: I will start by referring to something in Solar Server's April 2011 piece on microinverters and power optimizers . Where we came from two years ago when we started the company, our objective was to do an optimizer product for larger-scale systems. As we got into that and got down to development for prospective clients, it became clear that there was not a lot of credibility in the claims of energy harvest that would come in larger scale systems for an optimizer or microinverter technology.

Solar Server: First off, let's deal with the elephant in the room. What are your thoughts on the developing trade case that SolarWorld has petitioned for? What are your expectations for how the Chinese PV industry and government will respond, and what you think this will mean for the PV industry?

Chris Brown: First off, I think it is a lot more complicated. I think that treating this as a trade dispute purely between China and the U.S. is not only bad for the industry as a whole, but also not accurate in the sense that you have installers in the U.S. who are against the suit and who are going to suffer from it.

Leveling the playing field: an interview with CASE Chair and Co-founder Jigar Shah on the SolarWorld trade case, the advantages of low-cost modules and national policy

Solar Server: Can you summarize for our readers CASE's specific objections to the trade petitions filed by SolarWorld and the six other companies, and what dangers you feel the current actions by the Department of Commerce and the ITC pose for the U.S. solar industry?

Jigar Shah: The challenge that CASE has is that the vast majority of jobs in the United Solar Industry really come from the downstream sector, and the downstream sector is very vulnerable to price increases from modules. And our sense is that in fact lower cost modules in a competitive environment is better than the alternative.

Designing for simplicity, efficiency and reliability: An interview with SPG Solar Director of Commercial and Utility Products Bill Elwell

Solar Server: Tell me a little bit about your tracker system. In a market with so many tracker designs, what differentiates it from other systems?

Bill Elwell: SPG Solar is a leading producer of single-axis trackers. We have approximately 40 MW of installed trackers throughout the United States. A key differentiator of our tracker is installation time. The installation time of our tracker is very similar to what it is with a fixed-tilt system. A key driver of this is that the posts per MW of our tracker are much lower, sometimes as low as 30%, 40% lower than other single-axis trackers available on the market. The reason for that is that we mount three modules in landscape, with large north-south spans.

Solar Server: Can you talk about EuPD Research's Joint Forces for Solar program, what the program is, and why the PV industry needs this approach at this time?
Markus Hoehner: This industry was really standing together when I look at the times 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006. And then, when these huge capacities have been ramped up, it has become a more competitive industry.
And right now we are facing tough times. There are quite dark clouds appearing on the sky, a downturn of feed-in tariff market, and of course we have to bridge the gap towards grid parity and towards the emerging market.

Solar Server: I note that Hanwha SolarOne had a difficult 2Q 2011, with declining revenues, shipments and margins, and yet your company continues its ambitious capacity expansions. What gives Hanwha SolarOne its optimism?

Andreas Liebheit: Hanwha SolarOne is in a special position as about 50% of our business is based on original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), which means we manufacture modules for large brand system integrators, which then resell these modules under their own label.

Solar Server: Congratulations on the launch of your new R&D center in Shanghai. Specifically, what approaches is the R&D center taking to increase cell efficiencies?
Arturo Herrero: Being one of the only two companies that has its own lab in China is certainly a big milestone for JinkoSolar.
The R&D center will mainly be dedicated to conducting tests similar to those performed in TÜV or UL labs for evaluating modules. Our testing entails checking 16 different points of the production line to ensure modules of the highest quality. Having the ability to facilitate these tests in house leaves us well positioned to easily obtain certifications for our products down the road.

Solar Server: Given China's recent announcement of a national price for PV, can you quantify Suntech's expectations for the short- and medium- term future of the Chinese PV market? What are some other factors that will affect this market?

Andrew Beebe: China’s recent feed-in-tariff announcement is a huge step towards its goal of 10GW installed solar capacity by 2015. China’s wind energy feed-in-tariff in 2009 led to the tremendous growth of its wind energy industry in only a few years, and we can expect the same type of boom for solar.

Solar Server: Does SOLON Corporation have basically the same focus as SOLON SE, or do you have different priorities?

Bill Richardson: We address different markets. The whole reason that SOLON exists in the U.S. is to address the U.S. market, which is different than the European market. But it is still similar values: high quality product, turnkey systems, all of the solutions.
