Apple Inc. (Cupertino, California, U.S.) has applied to the Utilities Commission in the U.S. state of North Carolina to build a 20 MW-AC solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in Catawba County.

Apple expects to commission the plant in October 2013. This will be Apple's second 20 MW PV plant in Catawba County, following the 2012 completion of its first plant adjacent to its data center in Maiden.

The first PV plant is accompanied by a 10 MW fuel cell installation, and is the largest user-owned, onsite PV plant in the nation. The Maiden data center is also a LEED platinum certified building.
