On March 21st, 2011, Pythagoras Solar Inc. (San Mateo, California, U.S.) announced that it has been chosen by Willis Tower to collaborate on a pilot project which will use Pythagoras' transparent solar photovoltaic (PV) windows on the building's 56th floor.
Pythagoras states that the BIPV solution which it is providing has the potential to expand to an area allowing over 2MW of generation.
"We are incredibly proud to be considered to contribute our part for the 'greening' of the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, the iconic Willis Tower," said Pythagoras Solar Co-founder and CEO Gonen Fink. "With its combined benefits, our technology is set to provide Willis Tower with a valuable tool that will help move it toward its energy efficiency goals."
Pilot program includes energy efficiency, renewable energy goals
The Willis Tower was formerly known as the Sears Tower, and is located in downtown Chicago, Illinois. The pilot project for the building was developed in November 2010, and includes both energy efficiency and renewable energy goals, with the aim of exploring possible best practices for replication at other buildings.
Pythagoras Solar states that it is the first company to offer a fully integrated photovoltaic glass unit which addresses the need for energy efficiency and high power density while offering architectural design benefits.
