On December 6th, 2011 Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF, New York, New York, U.S.) announced that global investments in renewable energy, energy efficiency and smart grid technologies have reached USD 1 trillion dollars since 2004.

The company also notes that annual clean energy investment has increased nearly five-fold in that time, from USD 52 billion in 2004 to USD 243 billion in 2010, at a compound annual growth rate of 29%.

"The trillionth-dollar milestone shows that the world is not waiting for a deal on climate in order to start turning the super-tanker away from fossil fuels,” said BNEF CEO Michael Liebreich.

“It should serve as a message to the UN and all those in Durban to stop obsessing about a binding deal to cap carbon emissions, and to think much harder about how to speed up investment in the solutions. Another five years of investment growth at the same compound rates, and the world will have broken the back of emissions growth.”

BNEF: Record clean energy investments in 2011

BNEF states that it expects record clean energy investments in 2011 as well, driven in part by funding for concentrating solar power (CSP) projects in the United States, high levels of activity in China and Germany, and national renewable energy programs in India.

The company also predicts that clean energy investment flows will maintain a long-term increase, with capital costs for renewable energy technologies falling and smart grid technologies remaking the electricity grid.

BNEF will publish preliminary figures for total 2011 clean energy investments early in 2012.
