Eight19 deploys IndiGo off-grid PV systems in South Sudan

- Eight19 has deployed its IndiGo system in four African nations to date, with deployment currently planned for one more and trials for another
On February 21st, 2012 Eight19 Ltd. (Cambridge, U.K.) announced that it has begun deploying its pay-as-you-go IndiGo off-grid solar photovoltaic (PV) solution in South Sudan, in partnership with NGO WorldVenture (Littleton, Colorado, U.S.).
The company expects that it will deploy 1000 units in the first half of 2012 in the nation's Nimule region. South Sudan is the fourth African nation where Eight19 has deployed its IndiGo system.
"The positive response and widespread interest in IndiGo since we launched it in Kenya six months ago has been fantastic and is fueling our expansion," stated Eight19 CEO Simon Garth.
"Working with local delivery partners, such as WorldVenture in South Sudan, ensures that IndiGo reaches those communities quickly and easily and so bringing immediate benefits. We are working hard to deploy our units fast enough to keep up with the demand to further stimulate economic development in the world’s youngest country."
IndiGo units to provide power for light, internet connections, electronic devices
The IndiGo units consist of a battery, a PV module, lights and a phone charging device. Eight19 states that through delivery of the units, it aims to stimulate social and economic development by providing power for lighting, internet connections and electronic devices.
The company estimates that 1.6 billion persons globally lack access to grid electricity, and many pay high prices for kerosene to serve lighting needs. In South Sudan, WorldVenture has noted that some resident burn grass despite the health hazards from smoke and risk of fire spreading, in order to have light at night.
