Martifer Solar to build first phase of 80 MW PV project in Northern Mexico

Martifer Solar SA (Oliveira de Frades, Portugal) has been awarded a contract from Consorcio Integrador Sonora80M (Mexico City, Mexico) to build the first 20 MW phase of an 80 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) project in the Mexican state of Sonora.

Martifer Solar will also be in charge of operation and maintenance services upon completion of the project, which will feature trackers. Integrador Sonora80M laid the foundation stone for the CIS80M project on September 13th, 2012, in a ceremony attended by the Governor of Sonora.

PPAs with nearby municipalities

The CIS80M project will be located 30km south-west of Hermosillo, Sonora, and the first phase will cover 100 hectares. Integrador Sonora80M has signed power purchase agreements with multiple nearby municipalities for portions of the output of the first phase.

This will be a very large project for Mexico, which analysts expect to commission 15 MW of PV in 2012. Northern Mexico has very strong natural conditions both for PV and concentrating solar power (CSP) technologies, and passed a net metering policy in 2007 for small residential and commercial systems.
