On December 4th, 2012 ABB (Zurich, Switzerland) announced that it has been awarded roughly USD 225 million in contracts to supply two solar photovoltaic (PV) plants totaling 64 MW to be built in South Africa.

ABB will supply turnkey solutions for the plants, including design, engineering, installation and commissioning, and will additionally supply inverters, protection equipment, switchgear, transformers and controllers, as well as supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems.

The Witkop and Soutpan Solar Parks will be among the first utility-scale PV plants to be built in phase 1 of South Africa's Independent Power Producer program.

"Our vast experience in supplying high-efficiency PV power plants, combined with our local capabilities and presence will enable us to deliver best-in-class solutions and support the country’s vision to integrate renewable energies," said ABB Power Systems Division Head Brice Koch.

Plants to be completed in 2013

Special purpose entities Core Energy and Erika Energy, whose primary stakeholders include SunEdison LLC (Beltsville, Maryland, US), awarded the contracts. The two plants will be located in Limpopo Province, South Africa, and are scheduled to be completed in 2013.
