Xinhua: 90% of Chinese polysilicon producers suspend production

The China Photovoltaic Industry Alliance (CPIA) has reported that 90% of Chinese polysilicon producers have suspended production, according to the Chinese government news agency Xinhua.

CPIA Secretary-General Wang Bohua also stated that Jiangsu Zhongneng Polysilicon Technology Development Company Ltd. (Xuzhou, China), Daqo New Energy Corporation (Chongqing, China), Asia Silicon Company Ltd. (Xining, China) and other producers are operating at half capacity.

The Xinhua article, dated December 12th, 2012, cited Jiangsu Zhongneng Deputy General Manager Lu Jinbiao, who stated that his company was producing polysilicon at only 60% of capacity in November 2012.

 

Prices fall more than 50% during 2012

Xinhua estimates that prices for polysilicon have declined by more than 50% in 2012, from CNY 230 (USD 36.80) per kilogram (kg) in early January 2012 to CNY 110 (USD 17.60) per kg at the beginning of December 2012.

In the first ten months of 2012, Chinese imports of polysilicon increased 26% to 70,200 metric tons, with import prices of USD 26.16 per kg.
