Wiki-solar.org has released rankings of the top utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) contractors, power purchasers and inverter suppliers in 2012, drawing on data from PV plants 10 MW and larger.
The organization names Enerparc AG (Hamburg, Germany) as the largest engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor, with 607 MW built at 15 sites. SMA Solar Technology AG (Neistetal, Germany) was the largest inverter supplier, with 454 MW at 14 sites.
"German contractors have maintained a strong position, even as the focus has switched from Germany and other European markets," says Philip Wolfe of Wiki-solar. "Many have set up subsidiaries in the USA and other growing markets like India, South Africa and South America."
"Systems engineering and development are still led by European and US-based companies, while Chinese companies are becoming prominent in the supply of solar modules."
Wiki-solar notes that both its inverter and power purchaser rankings are based on "relatively sparse" data.
Juwi Solar, First Solar next in EPC rankings
Wiki-solar lists Juwi Solar GmbH (Wörrstadt, Germany) and First Solar Inc. (Tempe, Arizona, US) as the next two largest EPCs, with 296 MW and 226 MW built over 16 and five sites respectively.
The next two largest suppliers of inverters for these projects are identified as Schneider Electric SA (Rueil-Malmaison, France) and PowerOne Inc. (Camarillo, California, US), with 247 MW and 117 MW respectively.
California utilities lead power purchaser rankings
San Diego Gas & Electric Company (SDG&E, San Diego, California, US) was the largest purchaser with 295 MW at two sites. After SDG&E, the next two largest power purchasers are listed as Pacific Gas & Electric Company (San Francisco, California, US) and NV Energy Inc. (Reno, Nevada, US).
