Solar Trade Association welcomes updated UK Renewables Roadmap

The roadmap calls for a strategy that will cover all sub-sectors of PV

The UK Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has announced that solar photovoltaic (PV) technology will have a unique dedicated strategy in 2013, in the 2012 update to the "UK Renewables Roadmap", released on December 27th, 2012.

However, the roadmap does not set out concrete pathways to 2020 for the eight renewable energy technologies which it covers. Regardless, the roadmap was lauded by the nation's Solar Trade Association (STA, Milton Keynes, UK).

"The Renewables Roadmap shows that solar PV is now fully recognized as a significant contributor to the UK’s renewables mix," stated STA CEO Paul Barwell. "We’d go further and say solar PV will be a heavy-lifter in the UK’s broader energy mix."

"We’re going to be a lot cheaper than CCS and nuclear in the 2020’s. It’s therefore absolutely right that solar has its own dedicated strategy, as gas now has, and we look forward to working with DECC on this."

Roadmap to cover all sub-sectors of PV

STA notes under the roadmap, all sub-sectors of PV, including commercial PV, will be covered in the strategy. The organization notes that the value of smaller-scale PV projects is also better recognized, and the roadmap also identifies grid issues as an area for action.
