REC to reduce polysilicon production in Washington state

- REC's polysilicon plant in Moses Lake, Washington is the only facility to be affected by the reduction
Citing market and price pressures, Renewable Energy Corporation ASA (REC, Sandvika, Norway) has announced that it will temporarily reduce solar-grade polysilicon production at its facility in the US state of Washington.
REC will reduce output at its Polysilicon 1 facility in Moses Lake, Washington, where it produces polysilicon using the Siemens process. The decision will affect 46 positions, and REC states that it will attempt to utilize some of these employees in existing vacancies.
"To remain competitive, the organization in Moses Lake has worked very hard this past year to drive operating costs down, but under these current economic conditions it is not viable to continue production when market prices for the Siemens solar chunk product has fallen well below the cost to produce it," said REC Silicon President Tore Torvund.
Montana facility to produce 20,000 MT in 2013
Granular solar-grade polysilicon from REC's fluid bed reactor process and electronic grade polysilicon production at its facility in Butte in the US state of Montana are scheduled to produce 20,000 metric tons in 2013.
