Los Angeles Mayoral candidate calls for 1,200 PV installations

- LA Mayoral candidate Eric Garcetti: "If they can do 1,200 MW in Ontario, Canada, we can do it here in Los Angeles”
Los Angeles (California, US) Mayoral candidate Eric Garcetti announced that he would install 1,200 megawatts (MW) of solar photovoltaic (PV) rooftop systems in Los Angeles as mayor.
Current capacity of the city's solar rooftop pilot program is 100 MW. Data collected and positive feedback from customers and businesses suggests that the city can expand the program to 1,200 MW.
Solar power to create thousands of jobs
"It makes environmental and economic sense for the DWP to power the city with clean energy generated right here in Los Angeles instead of importing fossil fuel electricity from out of state," Garcetti said.
"If they can do 1,200 MW in Ontario, Canada, we can do it here in Los Angeles. This will create thousands of jobs and help reach my goal of making DWP coal and nuclear free."
Two program steps with 600 MW proposed
Garcetti was instrumental in the city's current 100 MW solar rooftop program and previously announced a plan to implement, as mayor, a 600 MW program to create 20,000 jobs. That program would be joined by a new, separate program to deploy an additional 600 MW by putting solar panels on city government buildings, administrative actions to streamline solar permitting and implementing Proposition 39 to put solar at LA schools, and other measures.
