On February 25th, 2013 Isofotón SA (Madrid, Spain) signed a memorandum of understanding with Lancaster Group (Almaty, Kazakhstan) to build solar photovoltaic (PV) manufacturing and polysilicon production facilities in Kazakhstan.

The factories will serve Central Asian markets. Isofotón will also provide technology expertise, in cooperation with the Center for Silicon Solar Technology (CENTESIL) at the Polytechnical University of Madrid (Madrid, Spain).

“(This agreement is) a key step in reinforcing our international presence in this case on Central Asia market and reaching the integration of all the value chain within PV business, something capital nowadays and that demonstrates our strength and flexibility,” states Isofotón CEO Angel Luis Serrano.

Kazakhstan moves into PV manufacturing

Isofotón notes that its Kazakh MOU follows on its international expansion efforts including the opening of a PV factory in the US state of Ohio and an office in Singapore.

This will not be the first foray into PV manufacturing in Kazakhstan. State-owned power company Kazatomprom (Astana, Kazakhstan) expects to commission the first 50 MW line at its PV module factory in Astana during the first quarter of 2013.
