Italy's Ministry of Economic Development (SEN) has released a draft National Energy Policy for the nation, in which it predicts 1 GW of solar photovoltaic (PV) installations every year outside of incentive programs through 2020.

SEN estimates that this will translate to roughly 8 TWh of additional solar power production from PV by 2020, along with another 3 TWh anticipated through the feed-in tariff from August 2012 through 2013.

PV projected to meet 10% of demand by 2020

Together with the existing ~20 TWh of annual electricity production, this would translate to around 30 TWh of annual production from PV, or roughly 10% of the nation's total demand.

In the draft strategy, the exact mechanisms to support this expected 1 GW market are unclear, but the document stresses the importance of PV in helping to meet the nation's energy needs, as well as “complete integration with the market”.
