A special photovoltaic system was installed at the SOS children’s village in Vari (Greece) with the cooperation of BP Solar, RSEnergy, SMA, and PPC Renewables. The system which will produce more than 2000 kWh of solar electricity per year was installed on the roof of the central administration building. The modules were donated by BPSolar, inverter and monitoring system by SMA Hellas and design, plan, installation, mounting system and overall project management by RSEnergy Greece. PPC Renewables donated the metering and the connection to the grid network. During the festivities of the project’s official inauguration, which took place on December 19th, 2008, the official representatives of the four companies pointed out that such pilot photovoltaic projects can highlight the significance as well as the appreciation of renewable sources of energy for the SOS children.

The photovoltaic system reduces CO2 emissions by 2 tons every year and will bring a steady income to the village for the next 20 years from the energy that it will produce. Most importantly, it will offer the opportunity to the children to learn and appreciate related issues to renewable sources of energy. The system is equipped with a customized display which reports the energy produced, as well as the avoided CO2 emissions. The display is placed at the entrance of the administration building.

The children took creative part in a solar quiz game regarding the importance of renewable sources of energy as well as the sustainable energy from the sun. The children’s SOS village in Vari was the first of the SOS villages that was built in Greece back in 1982. The village hosts nowadays 53 children. SOS villages is the largest philanthropic organization worldwide for children and is active in more than 124 countries, to help children in need. With a life-span of more than 50 years, it has already helped more than a million children around the globe, while 70.000 children are fully dependent on the SOS villages for a warm and welcoming family environment.
