AES and AIMCo to acquire solar project developer sPower from Fir Tree Partners


AES Corporation (AES; Arlington, Virginia) and Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada), on behalf of certain of its clients, have agreed to acquire renewable energy provider FTP Power LLC (sPower, Salt Lake City, Utah, U.S.), from New York based private investment firm Fir Tree Partners and its minority owners, for USD 853 million in cash, plus the assumption of USD 724 million in non-recourse debt. SDG&E unveils 30MW/120 MWh lithium ion battery energy storage facility in California


On February 24th, 2017, San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E, San Diego, California) showcased a 30 megawatt (MW) lithium-ion battery energy storage facility in partnership with AES Energy Storage, which will enhance regional energy reliability while maximizing renewable energy use. The American solar workforce grew at a historic pace in 2016, a year when one out of every fifty new U.S. jobs was in the solar industry, according to the new “National Solar Jobs Census 2016,” the seventh annual report on solar employment issued by The Solar Foundation. The National Solar Jobs Census 2016 found that solar industry employment growth outpaced the overall U.S. economy by 17 times as it increased by over 51,000 jobs, for a total of 260,077 U.S. solar workers. Global solar power demand grows nearly 50% in 2016, Europe drops by 20%


European countries installed around 6.9 GW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity in 2016 – a 20% decrease compared to the 8.6 GW that was grid-connected in 2015, according to SolarPower Europe (Brussels), the association of the solar power sector in Europe. In the same period, the global on-grid solar PV market grew by about 49% to around 76.1 GW in 2016, from about 51.2 GW in 2015. Read more...
