European countries installed around 6.9 GW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity in 2016 – a 20% decrease compared to the 8.6 GW that was grid-connected in 2015, according to SolarPower Europe (Brussels), the association of the solar power sector in Europe. On January 26th, 2017 in a meeting of the EU Member States trade experts, the European Commission's proposal to extend trade measures on photovoltaic (PV) panels and solar cells imported from China, Taiwan and Malaysia was defeated. More than half the Member States of the EU voted against extending the measures and instead for the first time in history the proposal of the Commission is subject to an appeal from the Member States, SolarPower Europe (Brussels) reports. SMA Solar Technology AG (Niestetal, Germany) generated a sales record in 2016 with more than 8 GW of PV inverter output sold (2015: 7.3 GW). According to provisional estimates by the Managing Board, SMA generated sales of more than EUR 940 million in continuing operations in 2016 (pro-forma 2015: EUR 981.8 million) and substantially increased operating earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) to approximately EUR 65 million (pro-forma 2015: EUR 43.3 million) despite an unexpectedly sharp decline in average selling prices of nearly 20%.
