Saft subsidiary Tadiran Batteries to power BrightSource’s 121 MW Ashalim concentrating solar power plant in Israel

Tadiran Batteries, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Saft Group (Paris, France) and a developer of lithium batteries for industrial use, has been awarded a contract by Oakland (U.S.) based BrightSource Energy Inc., a concentrating solar power (CSP) technology company. Under this contract Tadiran will provide rechargeable energy packs to power more than 50,000 controllable mirrors – called heliostats being deployed at the Ashalim CSP plant, located in the Israeli desert and to be constructed by Alstom. Solar surges in the Middle East and North Africa, driving need for latest in efficient technology

Last year was a breakthrough year for solar in the Middle East with over 30 solar projects awarded – a ten-fold increase on 2013, according to The Middle East Solar Industry Association (MESIA). MESIA also predicts that in 2015, more than 1,500MW worth of solar projects will be tendered to meet the rising electricity demands set by the region’s population, which is estimated to continue growing by approximately 1.9 percent year-on-year. Solar Server: Can you talk a little about ADEREE, its origins, and its work? Saïd Mouline: Morocco has been involved in renewable energy for 30 years. But a new approach was developed two years ago. It was decided then at the highest level of the state to give priority to renewable energy and energy efficiency in our energy policy. At the same level, we had created a renewable energy development center in 1982. This center worked many years for the development of technologies, looking at sites, looking at different applications, mainly for rural electrification, communications, solar pumping.
