Abbreviation for copper indium diselenide (CuInSe2), a chemical used for the Selective Coating of Solar Cells.

CIS thin film solar cells consist of multiple layers of CuInSe2 with varying amounts of contaminating elements (Doping). The advantages of such cells include lower amounts of needed production materials and cost-effective manufacture. In fact, with CIS thin film technology the cost of a PV Module should be halved. The disadvantage of these solar cells is that their Efficiency is lower than standard polycrystalline silicon cells and it decreases as they age.
