On October 5th, 2012, the Honourable Ted Menzies, Canadian Minister of State (Finance), on behalf of the Honourable Joe Oliver, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, celebrated Drake Landing Solar Community's (DLSC, Okotoks, Alberta, Canada) new world record of covering 97% of its space heating needs through solar thermal energy. This project is coordinated by the Government of Canada.

America's first large-scale seasonal solar thermal storage system

DLSC, located south of Calgary, has North America's first large-scale seasonal storage solar system and is home to 52 solar-heated residences. The Drake Landing Solar Community project was initiated by Natural Resources Canada, which continues to be the project's central coordinator. Natural Resources Canada has invested approximately USD 3 million in the project.

Government supports energy efficiency and innovation

Minister Menzies also recognized the Drake Landing Solar Community for receiving the prestigious Energy Globe World Award for Sustainability last year.

"Our government continues to support projects that increase energy efficiency and innovation across our country - including right here in Okotoks," said Minister Menzies.

"This world record demonstrates the results this community is achieving by setting new milestones in renewable energy technology."

Drake Landing Solar Community received the prestigious Energy Globe World Award for Sustainability in 2011, giving the community worldwide recognition. The project was selected for its innovative excellence by a jury composed of members of international organizations such as the World Bank and the European Renewable Energy Council.

Environmentally friendly housing

"The Town of Okotoks is extremely proud to be a part of the success of the Drake Landing Solar Community," said Mayor Robertson.

"Being able to reach our energy goals, provide an innovative and environmentally friendly housing option to our residents and maintain the sustainable visions of Okotoks are incredibly important to our community as a whole."

"As the managing partner and operator of this facility, ATCO Gas is honoured to be part of this record-breaking achievement," said Bill Stephens, Senior Vice President and General Manager of ATCO Gas. "The continued success of the Drake Landing Solar Community is a reflection of ATCO Gas's commitment to environmental sustainability."
