The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA, Washington DC, US) has launched a new trade group to advance the solar heating and cooling industries in the United States.

The U.S. Solar Heating and Cooling Alliance (SHC Alliance) will work to develop a common vision for the industry and raise awareness with policymakers, potential customers, investors and financiers. Mike Healy of Skyline Innovations Inc. (Washington DC, U.S.) will serve as chairman of the SHC Alliance, with Matt Carlson of Sunnovations Inc. (McLean, Virginia, U.S.) serving as vice chairman.

"We’re thrilled that this partnership between SEIA and the U.S solar heating and cooling (SHC) industry has been established to focus on securing pathways to greater deployment of solar heating and cooling technologies," said newly elected SHC Alliance Chairman Mike Healy.

"This collaboration will empower us to heighten awareness of this technology and the benefits it can provide to families and businesses."

The SHC Alliance aims to serve as a coordinated voice on industry issues, and to promote the industry through collaboration and funding collective work. The Alliance will be governed collaboratively between SEIA and its governing body, the U.S. Solar Heating and Cooling Council.

Eileen Prado of Solar Rating and Certification Corporation (Cocoa, Florida, U.S.) will serve as treasurer of the new organization, with Les Nelson of the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials and Ole Pilgaard of Heliodyne Inc. (Richmond, California, U.S.) serving as rotating members.

SEIA estimates that the United States installed 35,500 solar water heating systems and 29,500 solar pool heating systems in 2010, to serve a total of more than 65,000 homes, businesses and pools.
