The Lebanese retail pioneer ABC launched an unprecedented sustainable eco-friendly project in Lebanon that uses photovoltaics to generate electricity. The Solar PV System was designed and implemented by ECOsys (Beirut).

The system installed on ABC Achrafieh’s landmark dome and flat surfaces is the largest private PV system in Lebanon, ECOsys reports. It includes 1,704 panels covering a surface of 4,000 m2, which will be able to deliver 450 kW for a yearly solar power production of 621 MWh, representing 21% of ABC’s department store electricity needs.

Savings can reach up to USD 10,000 per month

This will also offset 366 tons of CO2 on an annual basis. The generated energy is equivalent to the need of 500 average homes. The system will not only reduce ABC’s electricity bills, but also raise ecological awareness, ECOsys emphasizes.

The system's efficiency reportedly derives from an innovative design that maximizes power and long-term savings, resulting in a payback period for ABC of less than five years, and free renewable energy for up to 20 years after that. The total electricity savings according to ECOsys can reach up to USD 10,000 per month.

ABC wants to incentivize other corporations to adopt smart eco-solutions

“Today, we are gathered in ABC Achrafieh to announce the completion of the photovoltaic project, one of the biggest green initiatives undertaken by a Lebanese corporation. This project is a first step towards realizing our goal of applying the highest standards of green design on all ABC edifices,” said ABC’s CEO, Mr. Robert Fadel. With this project, ABC wants to incentivize other corporations to adopt smart eco-solutions.

“We at ECOSys believed in the future and in the importance of the renewable energy, and started investing in that field more than a decade ago. We worked a lot to reach the expertise and the leading position which we currently enjoy,” added Mr. Georges Geha, Chairman of Midware Data Systems.

ECOsys is a Midware Data Systems division, specialized in providing renewable energy solutions.
