National Census: Solar accounts for 1 in 50 new U.S. jobs in 2016


The American solar workforce grew at a historic pace in 2016, a year when one out of every fifty new U.S. jobs was in the solar industry, according to the new “National Solar Jobs Census 2016,” the seventh annual report on solar employment issued by The Solar Foundation. The National Solar Jobs Census 2016 found that solar industry employment growth outpaced the overall U.S. economy by 17 times as it increased by over 51,000 jobs, for a total of 260,077 U.S. solar workers. Energy retailer EnergyAustralia (Melbourne) on February 6th, 2017 announced one of Australia’s largest solar power purchase agreements to underpin development of the 142 MW Ross River solar project in Queensland. The power purchase agreement (PPA) is the second in EnergyAustralia’s USD 1.5 billion program to buy around 500 MW of power from new wind and solar energy projects across eastern Australia. Global solar power demand grows nearly 50% in 2016, Europe drops by 20%


European countries installed around 6.9 GW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity in 2016 – a 20% decrease compared to the 8.6 GW that was grid-connected in 2015, according to SolarPower Europe (Brussels), the association of the solar power sector in Europe. In the same period, the global on-grid solar PV market grew by about 49% to around 76.1 GW in 2016, from about 51.2 GW in 2015. Read more...

Neoen to develop solar PV projects totaling 130 MW in New South Wales


Three big solar photovoltaic (PV) projects in New South Wales supported by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) are set to begin construction within weeks after getting the financial green light. The PV projects in Parkes, Griffith and Dubbo with a total generation capacity of 130 MW will consist of more than 400,000 solar panels and when completed will provide enough solar power for 41,500 homes. EU member states reject solar trade duties


On January 26th, 2017 in a meeting of the EU Member States trade experts, the European Commission's proposal to extend trade measures on photovoltaic (PV) panels and solar cells imported from China, Taiwan and Malaysia was defeated. More than half the Member States of the EU voted against extending the measures and instead for the first time in history the proposal of the Commission is subject to an appeal from the Member States, SolarPower Europe (Brussels) reports. SMA Solar Technology AG announces sales record in 2016, increased operational earnings


SMA Solar Technology AG (Niestetal, Germany) generated a sales record in 2016 with more than 8 GW of PV inverter output sold (2015: 7.3 GW). According to provisional estimates by the Managing Board, SMA generated sales of more than EUR 940 million in continuing operations in 2016 (pro-forma 2015: EUR 981.8 million) and substantially increased operating earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) to approximately EUR 65 million (pro-forma 2015: EUR 43.3 million) despite an unexpectedly sharp decline in average selling prices of nearly 20%. The growth of photovoltaic (PV) technology around the world continues, and the global success story has now reached a further milestone: 300 gigawatts (GWp) of total installed solar power capacity around the world. Manz AG (Reutlingen, Germany) has entered into a strategic cooperation with Shanghai Electric Group Co., Ltd. and Shenhua Group Co., Ltd. in the field of CIGS thin-film technology. In the course of that, Manz AG received two bulk orders, one for a CIGS production line with a capacity of 306 MW and another one for a CIGS R&D line with 44 MW capacity, the company announces.
